Verdict
Buy the StopBox Pro when you need muscle-memory handgun access without batteries—nightstand, bag, or travel layer between on-body carry and a bolted safe. It's retention hardware, not a fire-rated vault. Use it for authorized hands that train the open; bolt a real safe for everything else.
Pros
- Fully mechanical—no batteries, biometrics, or keypad beeps
- Interior room for many full-size pistols with red dot and weapon light
- Made in the USA (Spokane, WA) with glass-reinforced polycarbonate-ABS and steel reinforcement
- Padlock and security-cable points; marketed as TSA-compliant for locked handgun transport
Cons
- Not a safe—manufacturer says do not leave it unattended as primary security
- No fire rating; polymer shell is retention, not residential burglary steel
- Muscle-memory opening takes practice; left-hand draw patterns need intentional setup
Retention, not a residential safe
StopBox USA calls the StopBox Pro a handgun retention device. They're not being coy. The box is for the hours a defensive pistol is still “in use”—nightstand, truck bag, range bag—when you want unauthorized hands slowed and authorized hands through the lid in a few practiced motions.
The full-size Pro listed at $159 on August 20, 2026. Built in StopBox’s own shop in Spokane, Washington. The lock is all mechanical: press the lid, enter a finger combination, hit the thumb lock, lift. No battery. No fingerprint reader. No keypad chirp at 2 a.m.
Need fireboard, a heavy door, and a bolted body? Buy a residential safe first. Already have that—or you're shopping specifically for quick, silent, battery-free handgun control? The Pro is easier to place correctly than most electronic lockboxes in this price band.
Specs that decide fitment
StopBox lists these for the Pro full-size:
- Exterior: 11.5" × 8.5" × 2.25"
- Interior: 9.25" × 7.15" × 1.75"
- Construction: glass-reinforced polycarbonate-ABS with steel reinforcement
- Combinations: 81 adjustable codes via included hardware
- Extras: padlock-compatible, security-cable compatible, marketed as TSA compliant for locked handgun transport
Height is the constraint. 1.75" of interior height clears many full-size pistols with a red dot and weapon light—StopBox markets that envelope outright—but compensated slides, tall plates, and odd light bodies still need a dry-fit. Don't assume a competition setup will clear because a duty Glock did.
StopBox also sells a Compact (interior 7.5" × 5.5" × 1.75"). This review covers the full-size Pro. Confirm which SKU you're ordering; the product page groups design variants (Black, Flag Camo, and limited graphics) on the same Pro chassis.
How the mechanical lock behaves
Opening is a sequence, not a single button:
- Press down on the lid
- Enter the finger combination
- Press the thumb lock
- Lift
Codes use full and partial finger presses across the mechanical pads—81 combinations with the included hardware. More than a toy clasp. Less than a UL-rated combination lock. Treat it as a barrier against casual access and grab-and-run delay, not against a patient person with time and tools.
Muscle memory matters. Owners who open the box once a week will be slower than owners who train the motion dry. Left-handed shooters often open with the right hand and present with the left; that works, but it's a training choice, not something the hardware does for you.
There's no electronic failure mode. There's also no electronic convenience. If someone in the household shouldn't open the box, they shouldn't know the combination—and you shouldn't leave the box where unsupervised access is the primary threat StopBox warns against.
What “not a safe” means day to day
StopBox’s intended-use language is blunt: the device conceals and restricts unintended access while the firearm is not on your body or in the safe. It is not meant to sit unattended as the only layer.
That maps to real setups:
- Nightstand / bedside: cable or padlock when you can; treat the Pro as authorized-adult control, not childproof architecture by itself
- Vehicle: out of sight, cabled when possible; a polymer case on a seat is advertising
- Travel: locked hard-sided container rules still apply—TSA-oriented marketing doesn't replace airline declaration procedures or state transport law
- Home layering: long guns and archival storage in a bolted residential safe; one defensive handgun in a Pro for people who are supposed to reach it
The shell is tough for its class—StopBox cites a weighted-gun drop from 35 feet—and the steel reinforcement is about impact and casual pry on a portable box. It is not RSC burglary steel. It has no fire rating.
Alternatives for the same job
Electronic biometric pods (Vaultek LifePod class and similar) win when multiple authorized adults need enrolled prints and you accept battery discipline. Steel quick-access boxes with keypad or biometric panels trade travel manners for a heavier home mount. Simple lockboxes with a key only are cheaper and slower.
The Pro’s pitch is narrow: mechanical speed, USA manufacturing, and an interior aimed at optics-era full-size pistols. If that pitch isn't your threat model, spend the money on a residential safe upgrade instead. Pricing and buying notes
$159 was the StopBox USA list price for the Pro on August 20, 2026; design options and bundles change. Confirm live inventory, dry-fit your primary pistol with optic and light, and budget a security cable if the box will live in a vehicle or soft bag.

Set the combination the day it arrives. Practice the open until it's boring. Keep the bolted safe for everything that should survive fire and patient theft. Used inside that lane, the StopBox Pro does the job its name claims—and no more.
