Verdict
The Bighorn SafeX 25.2 is the Costco way to buy a full-size USA residential safe: SafeX interlocking door, 60 minutes at 1,400°F, and usable interior depth at a member price that undercuts most dealer stickers. Treat the 44-gun claim as marketing, bolt it the day it lands, and verify live Costco pricing before you plan the room around it.
Pros
- USA-made by Rhino Metals with patented SafeX interlocking door (no traditional bolts)
- 60 minutes at 1,400°F with gypsum fireboard and heat-activated door seal
- ~17.2" interior depth and adjustable side shelves suit optics-heavy mixed storage
- Costco ground-floor delivery with setup; bolt-down kit included; limited lifetime warranty
Cons
- Costco’s public sheet does not publish body steel gauge—mass sits in the residential mid-tier
- 44-gun marketing count assumes thin geometries; real mixed batteries fill much sooner
- 430 lbs still needs floor anchors; opportunistic theft is a crew-and-dolly problem if unbolted
A warehouse executive safe, not a closet starter
The Bighorn SafeX 25.2 is a full-height residential safe sold through Costco: USA-built by Rhino Metals under the Bighorn name, online-only as model BFX6033 (item 1995341). The door does not use traditional locking bolts. It uses Rhino’s SafeX interlocking plates and studs.
Costco had it at $999.99 on August 7, 2026—$300 off a $1,299.99 list during a manufacturer promo scheduled through the end of August. Member pricing changes; check the live page before you buy.
This is the step after a slim closet safe when you want more cubic volume and a clearer fire claim without ordering a custom thick-steel vault. It is still a residential box. It is not TL-rated burglary steel, and it is oversized for a first 8–12 gun purchase.
SafeX instead of bolt throw
SafeX is why this door looks different from a Liberty Centurion or Winchester TS26. Traditional residential doors throw round or flat bolts behind a frame. SafeX uses wide-flanged anchor studs in the body and steel locking plates in the door. When locked, the plates move behind the stud rims and knit the door into the body.
Rhino sells that stack as stronger against pry on similarly priced steel, and as a way to keep the closed door nearly flush with the interior frame. In practice:
- Pry resistance comes from the interlocking plates and studs, not from counting “active bolts”
- Less door intrusion leaves more usable depth for barrels and optics
- The heat-activated seal sits in a tight gap, which helps both the fire and pry stories
Costco’s listing does not publish body steel gauge. At 430 lbs in a 60×33×22 footprint, the mass sits in the residential mid-tier—heavier than most import cabinets, lighter than a Browning Sporter SP23 or a Fort Knox Defender. Judge what you can verify: SafeX geometry, fire claim, interior depth. Do not invent a gauge the retailer omitted.
An unbolted 430 lb safe is still a crew-and-dolly problem. Bolted to a slab in an interior room, SafeX plus the armor plate and relocker is a coherent package against opportunistic theft and unauthorized household access—not against a patient crew with time and power tools.
Fire rating at 60 / 1,400
Value safes often stop at 30–45 minutes near 1,200°F. The BFX6033’s 60 minutes at 1,400°F is a clearer residential fire claim, built from gypsum fireboard and an expanding door seal rather than brochure adjectives alone.
Lab curves are not house-fire guarantees. Placement still matters: interior room, closed door, contents that should not be your only copy of critical paper. Heat still rises inside steel. What you buy here is a better time window than a painted cabinet—not immortality.
Interior depth that actually helps optics
The headline number is 44 long guns. Ignore it as a packing plan. Manufacturer slots assume friendly barrel geometries and minimal optics. A mixed hunting-plus-MSR battery with lights, scopes, and a document shelf will fill this box much sooner.
The useful number is interior depth: 17.22". That is meaningfully deeper than the Centurion 24’s ~13.5" or the Browning SP23’s 13". Combined with SafeX’s slim door and adjustable side shelves, this is a workable mixed-storage interior for owners who kept fighting shallow racks in smaller USA boxes.
Plan around:
- A real battery count, not the brochure rack
- The bonus cover shelf and side shelves for ammo, optics cases, and paper you do not want behind long guns
- External hinges and a full 180° swing so door organizers (if you add them later) remain usable
- Floor loading for 430 lbs plus contents—not a soft upstairs closet joist experiment
Delivery, doorway math, and bolting
Costco’s online offer includes ground-floor delivery, setup, and packaging removal on the listing we checked. That is part of the product. Stairs, long carries, and non-ground-floor placements are where Costco Direct jobs get expensive or declined—confirm the delivery terms on your order before you assume “included” covers your path.
Measure for 33" of width and roughly 24" of depth with hardware. Dry-fit the route. Once the safe is in the room:
- Use the included bolt-down kit the day it arrives
- Level before you load
- Change the factory code immediately
- Put battery replacement on a calendar; know the override procedure before you need it
- Keep backup credentials offline
An electronic SecuRam swingbolt lock is the right daily interface for most households. It fails the way flashlights fail: batteries and habits. The hardened plate and relocker are there for attack resistance, not for neglecting the keypad.
Against Liberty, Browning, and thicker steel
Liberty Centurion 24: Similar out-the-door neighborhood when Centurion street prices and delivery stack up. Centurion wins on a clearer published 14-gauge Dual Fusion story and Liberty’s dealer network. Bighorn wins on interior depth, SafeX’s boltless door, a stronger published fire temperature/duration on this SKU, and Costco’s bundled ground-floor delivery.
Browning Sporter SP23: Browning wins on published 12-gauge construction, UL RSC container listing, and ThermaBlock fire duration. Bighorn wins on cubic volume, interior depth, and Costco member pricing. If steel thickness is the purchase reason, buy Browning or step into Fort Knox. If volume-per-dollar at a warehouse is the reason, stay here.
Fort Knox Defender 6031: Different product. Ten-gauge uni-body, UL RSC, two-hour fire, and nearly 900 lbs. The Bighorn is not competing in that neighborhood.
Smaller Costco/Bighorn SafeX SKUs: Confirm fire minutes and exterior depth on the exact item number. Costco rotates SafeX configurations; a 30-minute sibling is not this review.

Buy this when you want a USA full-size residential safe with SafeX geometry, a 60-minute fire claim, and Costco logistics. Bolt it, load the 17-inch depth like a working interior rather than a brochure rack, and step up in steel thickness only when your threat model or insurance adjuster demands it.
