Browning Sporter SP23 Review — 12-Gauge Body, UL RSC, and ThermaBlock Fire

Entry-level for Browning means 12-gauge

The Browning Sporter SP23 is the high-tier answer in a ~23-gun residential footprint. Browning calls Sporter the highest-protection “entry-level” safe they sell. That isn't a contradiction. It's entry-level for Browning—12-gauge steel, UL RSC burglary listing, and 80/95-minute ThermaBlock fire—not 14-gauge import math.

Official pricing on Browning Safes was $1,649 at our August 2026 check, before delivery. Dealers cluster in the same band. Gloss finishes and freight push the out-the-door number higher. You buy this when a Winchester TS26-45 or Liberty Centurion 24 feels like the right size and the wrong construction.

Owners shopping a $900 closet box should look elsewhere. Owners parking a serious hunting battery, MSRs, and documents they'd miss in a fire should keep reading.

Fire protection first

Value safes often sell 30–40 minutes. The SP23 sells 80 minutes at 1,550°F and 95 at 1,200°F. That's a different class of claim—closer to “the fire department may arrive while the insulation is still working.”

External hinges and a Palusol seal cut the gap problems that hurt cheap inward-swing doors in fire tests. ThermaBlock’s interlocking boards are meant to reduce seams that let heat in. It's still a lab curve. Not a bank vault. And it's still dramatically more fireboard than a 306 lb import.

If fire duration is why you're shopping, this is the first safe in this size band that feels designed around that job instead of mentioning it in a footnote.

UL RSC and the security kit

A UL RSC listing means the container resisted a defined tool attack for a rated interval. It isn't TL-15. It also isn't five 1" pins bolted to 14-gauge and sold as equivalent.

The SP23’s security package holds together:

• 12-gauge body (~40% thicker than 14-gauge)
• 1" formed door with inner plate
• Force Deflector cam so pry energy is less likely to defeat the lock
• Pry-Stop end bolts tying into a steel angle so the bolt bar is harder to fold
• Three-sided 1" bolt coverage
• Hardened pins and hardplates at the lock

At 530 lbs, unbolted, it's still a two-person job with a truck. Bolted to a slab in an interior room, it's a serious residential deterrent. It isn't a government GSA container. Don't sell yourself that story.

Door storage and the 13" depth tax

The Sporter’s practical edge is long guns on the door. Seven Quick Access slots plus pouches and MOLLE-style organizers mean pistols, magazines, and a defensive rifle can live where you can see them—not behind a wall of hunting guns.

Plan for these limits:

• Door guns still count in the “23” marketing number—rear racks aren't a free extra set
• 13" interior depth remains the optics tax; two full rows of scoped ARs will compete for space
• Use the raised floor and carpeted racks; they exist because scratched stocks are common in this class
• 30" of width needs a real wall and a clear swing path

This interior is why collectors step up. The safe stops being a dark closet. It starts working as a storage system with visible, reachable slots.

Delivery weight and placement

530 lbs and 30" × 22.5" with handle isn't a DIY hero project for most houses. Browning’s own checkout offers dealer pickup or paid main-floor versus stair delivery. Budget $450–$550+ for placement if you aren't pulling it yourself. That's physics, not a surprise fee.

Once it's in the room:

1. Use the factory anchor holes
2. Confirm the electronic lock, battery tray, and backup procedure
3. Load heavy items low; don't turn 530 lbs into a top-heavy 600
4. Give the 180° door the swing it was designed for
5. Keep override credentials off-site

Against Winchester and Liberty at similar capacity

Winchester TS26-45: wins on price and Tractor Supply availability. The SP23 wins on steel, UL RSC, fire minutes, and door storage by a wide margin. The Winchester is a capacity-and-fire value box. The Browning is a construction upgrade.

Liberty Centurion 24: closest rival in role. Liberty wins on USA plant, simpler ownership cost, and lower price. Browning wins on gauge, burglary listing, fire duration, and interior design. If the collection is something you'd hate to explain to an insurance adjuster, the Sporter’s thicker steel and listed resistance earn the premium.

Larger Browning Gold/Medallion lines: the SP23 is the on-ramp. If you already know you need 33+ guns or longer fire, skip this size and buy the chassis you'll keep.

Pricing and buying notes

$1,649 is the official hatch. Hammer gloss gray and putty gray are the usual finishes. Confirm you're buying an SP23, not a similarly named Yellowstone/Yukon dealer exclusive with different fire minutes.

Browning’s lifetime warranty against break-in, attempted break-in, and fire (terms apply) is part of the pitch. Delivery, finish, and lock batteries aren't.

Plan the room and the freight before you order. Once the SP23 is bolted and leveled, load door slots for the guns you need first and keep the rear racks for the battery that can wait—then leave the 14-gauge value tier behind on purpose.
