Browning Sporter SP23 Review — Premium Build and Fire Rating for Serious Collectors

Who this safe is actually for

The Browning Sporter SP23 is the high-tier answer in a ~23-gun residential footprint. Browning’s own copy calls Sporter the highest-protection “entry-level” safe they sell. That is not a contradiction: it is entry-level for Browning, which means 12-gauge steel, UL RSC burglary listing, and 80/95-minute ThermaBlock fire—not 14-gauge import math.

Official pricing on Browning Safes was $1,649 at our August 2026 check, before delivery. Dealers cluster in the same band, with gloss finishes and freight pushing the out-the-door number higher. You buy this when a Sports Afield Instinct or Liberty Centurion 24 feels like the right size and the wrong construction.

If you need a $900 closet box, this is the wrong review. If you are parking a serious hunting battery, MSRs, and documents you would actually miss in a fire, keep reading.

The numbers that matter

From Browning’s Sporter 23 spec sheet:

Insulation stack on dealer sheets: about 1-7/8" ceiling, 1-1/4" body, 1-3/4" door. Raised floor so stocks are not sitting in a lip. 180° external hinges. Three carpeted shelves rated ~60 lbs each and two U-shaped barrel racks.

Fire protection: this is the feature you are paying for

Value safes sell 30–40 minutes. The SP23 sells 80 minutes at 1,550°F and 95 at 1,200°F. That is a different conversation—closer to “the fire department might arrive while the insulation is still doing work.”

External hinges and a Palusol seal shrink the gap story that kills cheap inward-swing doors in a fire test. ThermaBlock’s interlocking boards are meant to reduce the seams that let heat in. Still a lab curve. Still not a bank vault. Still dramatically more fireboard than a 306 lb import.

If fire is why you are shopping, this is the first safe in this trio that feels designed around that job instead of mentioning it.

Security posture: UL RSC is the line

A UL RSC listing means the container resisted a defined tool attack for a rated interval. It is not TL-15. It is also not “we bolted five 1" pins to 14-gauge and called it a day.”

The SP23’s security kit is coherent:

• 12-gauge body (~40% thicker than 14-gauge)
• 1" formed door with inner plate
• Force Deflector cam so pry energy is less likely to punch through the lock
• Pry-Stop end bolts tying into a steel angle so the bolt bar is harder to fold
• Three-sided 1" bolt coverage
• Hardened pins / hardplates at the lock

At 530 lbs, unbolted, it is still a two-person crime with a truck. Bolted to a slab in an interior room, it is a serious residential deterrent. That is the correct sentence. Do not pretend it is a government GSA container.

Living with DPX-style door storage

The Sporter’s party trick is long guns on the door. Seven Quick Access slots plus pouches and MOLLE-style organizers mean pistols, mags, and a defensive rifle can live where you can see them instead of behind a wall of hunting guns.

Caveats:

• Door guns still count in the “23” marketing number—your rear racks are not a free extra 23
• 13" interior depth remains the optics tax; two full rows of scoped ARs will fight
• Use the raised floor and carpeted racks; they exist because Browning knows what scratched stocks look like
• 30" of width needs a real wall, not a wish

This interior is why collectors step up: the safe stops being a dark closet and starts being a storage system.

Installation is half the product

530 lbs and 30" × 22.5" with handle is not a DIY hero story for most houses. Browning’s own checkout offers dealer pickup or paid main-floor vs stair delivery. Budget $450–$550+ for placement if you are not pulling it yourself. That is not a gotcha; that is physics.

Once it is in the room:

1. Use the factory anchor holes
2. Confirm the e-lock, battery tray, and backup procedure
3. Load heavy low; don’t turn 530 lbs into a top-heavy 600
4. Give the 180° door the swing it was designed for
5. Keep override credentials off-site

How it compares

• vs Sports Afield Instinct 24: Instinct wins price and interior depth. SP23 wins steel, UL RSC, fire minutes, and door storage by a wide margin. Different jobs.
• vs Liberty Centurion 24: closest rival in role. Liberty wins USA plant, slightly simpler ownership, lower price. Browning wins gauge, burglary listing, fire duration, and interior design. If the collection is “the thing you would hate to explain to an insurance adjuster,” pay for the Sporter.
• vs bigger Browning Gold/Medallion lines: SP23 is the on-ramp. If you already know you need 33+ guns or longer fire, skip this and buy the size you’ll keep.

Pricing and buying notes

$1,649 is the official hatch. Hammer gloss gray and putty gray are the usual finishes. Confirm you are buying an SP23, not a similarly named Yellowstone/Yukon dealer exclusive with different fire minutes.

Browning’s lifetime warranty against break-in, attempted break-in, and fire (terms apply) is part of the pitch. Delivery, finish, and lock batteries are not.

It costs more because the construction is thicker, heavier, and listed. If you have outgrown value 14-gauge boxes and you are done compromising on fire, this is the one to bolt down.
