Liberty Centurion 12 Review — The Sensible First Real Gun Safe

A first safe that behaves like a safe

Most households don't start with a thick-steel collector vault. They start when an unlocked rifle in a closet stops being acceptable—after a child visits, a roommate moves in, or the owner decides informal storage isn't enough anymore.

The Liberty Centurion 12 fills that gap. It's USA-built, fire-rated, fitted with a UL-listed electronic lock, and narrow enough that it doesn't need a dedicated safe room. Liberty lists it around $599 on the official Centurion page (as of our July 2026 check). That's more than a big-box cabinet. Far less than a 12-gauge residential security container.

It suits a small long-gun set: a few rifles, a shotgun, and documents worth protecting. Owners already stacking optics-heavy ARs and a full hunting battery should look at the Centurion 18, 24, or 32 instead. The 12 is sized for placement and daily use—not for stretching every marketing gun count.

Specs that drive the purchase

Liberty’s published figures for the Centurion 12 are specific:

What this chassis doesn't offer: a UL TL burglary rating, a spa-grade interior, or meaningful theft resistance without floor anchors. At 245 lbs it can be moved with planning. It can also be stolen if it sits unbolted.

Fire rating and what it assumes

Fire ratings describe a lab scenario. They don't guarantee any particular house fire. A 30-minute / 1,200°F Cool Box claim with Palusol sealing is still a clear step above a painted cabinet with no fireboard. For many homes, that interval buys time for evacuation and firefighting response.

Treat fire protection as one layer. Keep critical paper copies elsewhere when you can. Don't store the only copy of passports next to solvents. Heat still rises inside any closed steel box. The Centurion improves odds. It doesn't make contents immortal.

Security: Liberty Level 3, not a bank vault

Liberty’s “Level 3” label is their product ladder, not a UL TL rating. Read it that way. On this model you get:

• Folded Dual Fusion framing for rigidity
• A one-piece drill-resistant hardened plate over the lock
• A relocker that can dead-lock the mechanism under attack
• Seven pry-resistant Solid State bars rather than light round deadbolts

That's a coherent residential package for opportunistic theft and unauthorized household access—provided the safe is bolted into a closet slab. A targeted crew with tools and time needs thicker steel, a stronger door, and a different budget. The Centurion 12 is built for the first problem. Not the second.

Interior depth with optics

The 10" interior depth is the detail that catches first-time buyers. Scoped hunting rifles and AR setups with optics burn that space fast. Manufacturer gun counts assume friendly barrel geometries. In practice:

• Decide what must live here versus what can sit in a secondary lockbox
• Use barrel rests without forcing finishes against neighbors
• Add aftermarket door panels and pistol racks after the safe is placed and bolted
• Leave clearance; overcrowded safes scrape stocks and slow retrieval

Larger Centurion sizes add dual-flex shelving and more width. The 12 is the minimalist layout: top shelf plus gun rack. That simplicity helps if you want less fiddling and a clear primary battery.

Delivery, doorway clearance, and bolting

An unbolted Centurion is a heavy suitcase with a keypad. Liberty recommends professional delivery for good reason—doorway clearance, floor type, stairs, and discreet trucks all matter. Their guidance notes you should add clearance for handles and outlet kits when measuring, and that difficult installs can add cost.

DIY works for some ground-floor closet placements with the right dolly and enough helpers. It's also how people destroy trim and door frames. If you move it yourself:

1. Dry-fit the entire path, including the 18" minimum doorway Liberty cites
2. Match floor anchors to wood or masonry
3. Level before you commit to bolt holes
4. Change the factory code immediately
5. Store backup credentials offline—not on a sticky note in the jamb

Electronic lock habits

The SecuRam TopLit is a competent UL-listed electronic lock. Electronic locks fail the way flashlights fail: batteries and user habits. Put fresh batteries on a calendar. Know the override procedure before you need it. Owners who refuse electronics on principle can look at mechanical options elsewhere in Liberty’s lineup. For most households, a backlit electronic lock is what turns the safe into something used every day instead of something postponed.

How it sits against cabinets and other tools

Against a light Stack-On-style cabinet, the Centurion buys USA manufacturing, a clearer fire story, and locking hardware that reads as a safe rather than furniture. Against a Stack-On Total Defense fire/water unit, you trade some hazard-rating marketing and interior volume for a narrower footprint and Liberty’s warranty and dealer network. Against a Vaultek LifePod, there's no direct competition—that's a portable handgun tool for travel and quick access.

Many households end up with both: a Centurion (or larger) for long guns and documents, plus a biometric lockbox for a defensive handgun that shouldn't wait on a full door swing at 2 a.m.

Pricing and buying notes

Liberty lists the Centurion 12 at $599 on the official Centurion page. Street prices, finishes, and promotions move. Delivery and install are often separate line items and can exceed any “free shipping” expectation. Factor that into true cost. Buy from Liberty or a Liberty dealer; big-box listings for this model appear and disappear.
